This was Gibson's highest mandolin model for many years, and around the time this example was made the F-4 was on the cover, and given a two-page color spread, in the Gibson catalog. Given its status, it's no wonder it was given the elaborate headstock "torch" inlay and the pearl-and-wire inlaid tuner buttons. This F-4 is completely original with the exception of one subtle improvement: it's just been refretted here at Gryphon and as a result it's a 110 years-old mandolin that plays like a contemporary instrument, and players will enjoy the smoother fret feel and easier left-hand effort these new frets give you.
There are no cracks except for the binding shrinkage hairline to the top near the lower point. The original shellac varnish finish shows some playing wear, such as to the edge of the top near the tailpiece, and while this F-4 saw lots of use (which wore out the old frets!) the previous players took excellent care of it. Yes it's quite loud if you need it be, but there's a sweetness to the tone that new instruments just can't match. Comes with the original shaped hardshell case.
