1975 Rolex DateJust 18K Yellow Gold Ref. 1601

Continuously produced and incrementally upgraded since the 1940s, the DateJust is in many ways the backbone of the Rolex lineup. By the mid-70s, the DateJust had settled into a configuration that balanced its durable tool watch roots with a more refined form.

The reference 1601, usually a steel watch with a grey or silver dial, is widely considered a workhorse, or, the “starter vintage Rolex.” But when you find a carefully maintained example produced in 18k yellow gold with a black dial, this reference takes on an entirely different character. Our 1975 example features a gold-black-olive green combo which offers a much more modern and dressy quality than its monochrome steel counterparts.

Overall, this example is in very well-kept condition, with the original green Rolex sticker still present on the case back. The dial furniture shows no tarnishing, and the baton hour markers remain bright white, giving the watch a particularly clean appearance. The case and acrylic crystal show light surface wear, but the lugs remain well-defined with no signs of over-polishing. The original gold Rolex buckle is fitted on an olive green leather strap. Inside is the Rolex Caliber 1570 automatic movement, a movement known for its durability and long-term serviceability. Additionally, this DateJust comes complete with its original box and papers.
