Breedlove McKenzie KF Masterclass Mandolin Sunburst, 2013 [USED]

From the top of the line, this Breedlove McKenzie KF Masterclass Mandolin has a 'K-Drop' body style pairing an X-braced Spruce top with highly figured Maple.   The combination of X-bracing and F-holes is unusual, adding refined dynamics to the instrument's voice. 

This 2013 example was built in Bend, Oregon and is in very good, clean condition.  There is very little wear of any kind, most being light hazing on the faux-tortoise arm rest. 

Sold with the original teardrop hard shell case. 

Breedlove discontinued mandolin construction in 2016 to focus on guitar construction.   The Masterclass range indicated that the instrument was built and voiced by Breedlove's most experienced workers delivering the highest quality. 

The asymmetrical 'K-Drop' design by Kim Breedlove appeared in 1997 and is unique to the company and is based on a Florentine style, but with a stylized upper point.   The objective of the K-drop body is to emphasize volume and projection while maintaining a crisp well-balanced tone.  

Materials and Construction

The Breedlove McKenzie Masterclass mandolin primarily uses three woods - Sitka Spruce for the top and its X bracing, highly figured Maple for the sides, back, neck, body blocks and linings, and Ebony for the bridge, fingerboard and head plate. 

The headstock inlay uses Abalone for a stylized 'B' over a vine-leaf motif.  Position markers are small Mother of Pearl dots. 

For hardware, Breedlove used a set of gold coloured Schaller tuners and a cast Monteleone tailpiece.  The arm rest is a faux-tortoise plastic, rounded for comfort.
