Shown here is a very good condition Gibson Custom 1957 Les Paul Goldtop Reissue (LPR7) from 2008 with the VOS (Vintage Original Specification) finish treatment, original case, COA and hang tags.
Built as part of Gibson's Historic Collection, this guitar adheres to the original specifications as much as possible, including the chunkier '50s neck profile, bumblebee capacitors and 9.02 pound weight. While it is now 22 years old, there is very little wear, limited to light fret wear and a couple of light rivet marks on the back. The finish has some light lacquer checking, some from the VOS process and some from the natural aging process. It plays well and is very resonant with plenty of sustain and note-to-note separation.
Materials and Construction
For 1957 Gibson changed the construction of the Les Paul model to incorporate their new, patent applied for Seth Lover-designed Humbucking pickups.
The body is solid Mahogany with a carved Maple top. The long-tenon set neck is a single piece of mahogany, with the exception of two narrow pieces to fill out the headstock width. The bound fingerboard is Indian Rosewood, though the originals were Brazilian. The head plate layer is black-dyed Holly. The fingerboard position marker inlays are acrylic, while the Gibson logo at the head is Mother of Pearl, as was the original. The nut is Nylon.
Hardware includes a set of dual-line Gibson Deluxe tuners with plastic keystone buttons, an ABR-1 bridge, stop tailpiece, 50's style strap pins, a single-layer creme pickguard, pickup selector ring, aged switch tip, and gold Top Hat knobs. The hardware also has the VOS treatment adding a light patina.
The electronics start with a set of BurstBuckers, 1 and 2 for the neck and bridge respectively. The controls are CTS 500K audio taper potentiometers, and the .022 mfd tone capacitors are Bumblebee style - actually polypropylene with striped casings.
Model Naming and Finishes
To 1957, the maple-topped version was referred to as the "Les Paul model", with the only available finish being Goldtop. The black Les Paul Custom had a carved Mahogany top, while the Special and Junior had Mahogany slab bodies. For 1958, the Les Paul model became known as the Standard, and the now-iconic sunburst finishes became available.
