Gibson F-9 Mandolin Brown Burst, 2008 [USED]

This Gibson F-9 mandolin in Vintage Brown Burst finish dates to December 22, 2008 and was built in Nashville. It's in very good, clean condition with only light wear or tarnish, and a recent setup.  

The original hard shell Gibson case is included.

Construction and Materials

Not currently in production, the Gibson F-9 mandolin was a ‘no frills’ model featuring a carved and tuned spruce top and flame maple back, flame maple sides and neck, and an ebony fingerboard and bridge. Only the top is bound, and the instrument sports a satin finish in a either a Vintage Brown burst or Antique Sunburst. 

Otherwise, this is a Gibson F-style mandolin, with 13.93 (354mm) inch scale length, 1.06 inch nut width, and a rounded V neck profile. The tuners are nickel plated Grovers with pearloid buttons, and the Gibson-engraved tailpiece is nickel plated.

The Gibson F-style mandolin has been perhaps the most influential of American mandolins since Orville Gibson re-invented the mandolin in the closing days of the 19th century.  Though Orville did build a very few mandolins with a scroll, points and oval or round soundhole around 1900-3, the F-style with F-holes was designed by Lloyd Loar, and the first production models appeared in 1922. 

The Gibson F-9 Mandolin had a fitful production history.  Introduced in the very early 2000's, the 2010 Nashville floods destroyed Gibson's mandolin production for years.  In 2014, the F-9 and a few other models began to appear, but few are in the current catalog.
