This Gretsch Custom Shop Duo Jet is an outstanding example of high-level boutique craftsmanship, hand-built in 2007 by the legendary Stephen Stern, longtime Senior Master Builder at the Gretsch Custom Shop. Known for his meticulous attention to vintage accuracy and tone, Stern is widely regarded as one of the finest archtop and Gretsch-style builders in the world, with many of his guitars now considered modern collectibles.
Finished in a lightly aged black nitro lacquer, this Duo Jet features tasteful relic work, vintage-correct appointments, and subtle tarnishing of the hardware for a naturally worn-in aesthetic. The chambered mahogany body with maple top delivers the dry resonance, midrange punch, and lively acoustic response that defined the original '50s Gretsch electrics. The one-piece mahogany neck features a rosewood fingerboard, vintage-style frets with close to zero wear, and a comfortable medium C profile. Aged white binding, chrome Wilkinson open-gear tuners, and a vintage-style Synchro-Sonic bridge complete the build, while the Gretsch Custom Shop logo and Stephen Stern signature decal adorn the back of the headstock—signifying its origin from Gretsch’s most respected luthier.
Tonally, this Duo Jet is loaded with a pair of vintage-voiced Dynasonic single-coil pickups, offering exceptional clarity, top-end chime, and low-end focus with that unmistakable Gretsch character. It excels in everything from rockabilly and country to roots, slide, and expressive lead tones. With a short 24.6" scale and a 16th fret neck joint, it offers fast, articulate playability with great upper-register access. Includes the original Gretsch Custom Shop hardshell case and Certificate of Authenticity signed by Stephen Stern.
