First introduced in 1889 and scallop-braced for steel strings in 1927, the Martin 00-21 Steel String Acoustic Guitar was produced until 1996, with the model's next major changes coming in 1947 when the Ebony fingerboard was replaced with Rosewood, and in 1970 when Indian Rosewood was used in place of Brazilian.
At nearly 100 years old, this lovely Martin 00-21 plays well and has a lively, rich sound with lots of high end sparkle and good representation all the way to the basses.
Sold with a recent TKL hard shell, flat top case.
Construction and Materials
As a 00 model, the body size is fairly small and light, and as a 21 model the back and sides are rosewood but the decoration is slight - the fingerboard and head are not bound. The neck is a 12-fret design with a dovetail joint, and hide glue was used throughout.
This Martin 00-21 dates to 1927 and has an Adirondack Spruce top with no pickguard, Brazilian Rosewood for the back, sides and head plate, a mahogany neck with pronounced V profile, slotted peghead and bar frets, an unbound ebony fingerboard and ebony pyramid bridge. Mother of Pearl slotted snowflake inlays are used on the fingerboard, and Herringbone marquetry strips are used for the rosette and back strip. The back of the head has the Martin logo stamp and a 'Made in USA' stamp which indicates that it was intended for export.
The top has play wear where a pickguard might have gone. The string height is 5/64ths inch treble and 9/64ths inch bass.
The tuners are the original strip models with ivoroid (celluloid) buttons.
This example had a professional neck reset somewhere over a decade ago. It was also re-fretted with original style bar frets, a back crack repaired near the lower treble bout, play wear to the top below the sound hole towards the bridge. There appears to be some finish overspray on much of the guitar. The bridge and bridge plate are not original: the plate is a modern addition of Indian Rosewood and in good condition, while the current bridge is built up of two pieces of Indian Rosewood. The original bridge would have been Ebony in a straight, not pyramid, design.
