Martin 00-28VS 12-Fret Sunburst, 2011 [USED]

Part of the now-discontinued Vintage Series, the Martin 00-28VS 12-fret was a recreation of a classic Martin guitar from the earlier part of the 20th century.   These guitars were built approximately from 2009 to 2018, with about 855 made. 

This Martin 00-28VS 12-Fret with Sunburst finish dates to 2011 at the Martin Custom Shop in Nazareth, PA.   It is in overall good condition with very light fret wear and some lacquer finish checking particularly on the top.  A top crack was repaired. It plays well and has a good, well balanced tone but it appears to have not been played much so its voice will develop further. 

The original Martin Geib-style hard shell case is included and contains the case keys, a strap, second saddle and truss rod adjustment tool.  

Construction and Materials

The Martin 000-28vs used the midrange 00 size body, and the 28 material and trim set.   The top was Italian Alpine Spruce paired with Madagascar Rosewood for the back, sides and head plate, with herringbone binding around the top and in the center of the rosette.  Mahogany was used for the body blocks, linings and 12-fret neck, which featured a slotted headstock.
 
The mahogany 12 fret neck has an unbound ebony fingerboard, and the bridge is also ebony. The headplate is Indian Rosewood.   This guitar’s construction is interesting. It looks back to earlier times, when 12-fret necks were common. This design puts the bridge close to the center of the vibrating top, giving more output and a fuller, vibrant tone. 

For hardware, the nut and 16 inch radius saddle are bone, and the tuners are Waverly W48 brass side mount with Ivoroid buttons.
  
The shift to 14 fret necks was a response to the rising popularity of the guitar, at the expense of the banjo; the extra two frets were added to make the transition from banjo easier.   This guitar is in excellent condition with very minor play wear, and the original Martin hard-shell case is included.
