One of the most potent yet overlooked designs is a “00” concert body paired with deeper sides. There is something about this revised balance of the guitar's geometries that changes both the tone, and the playing effort, for the better. The soundboard has less of surface area than a dreadnought guitar, making it easy for finger-style players to achieve maximum resonance with little effort. The increased depth of the instrument increases the volume of air in the sound chamber, allowing for more low end than would otherwise be found in a small-bodied guitar. With all this in mind, we ordered this Custom “28” Style 00 from Martin as a way to test this unique combination with our customers. We opted to go with a Torrefied Sitka Spruce Top (what Martin calls "VTS") and Rosewood back and sides. This traditional tonewood pairing offers a complex, rich tone with tons of dynamic range. The subtle sunburst top with maple binding and herringbone purfling is a beautiful combination,, and the bound fingerboard has slightly rolled edges that increase your left-hand comfort.
