It is likely that the first Italian saxophones (after the invention of the instrument in 1848) were made in Quarna by Agostino Rampone around 1875, with the first prototypes having a wooden body.
Since 1990, the Rampone & Cazzani company has been run according to the tenets of fine craftsmanship by the Zolla family, descendants of the Rampone family. The company is based in the village of Quarna Sotto, birthplace of the original founder.
