If contemporary L-5 knock-off archtops are what you're after, this 15-inch beauty probably isn't an ideal choice for you. But if finely crafted guitars that wander off the usual pathways are of interest, this Oriole model by Portland luthier Tim Frick is worth a look. Tim's workmanship is top-notch, and displays a clean and consistently harmonious design. This example has a carved Sitka spruce top and myrtle back and sides. Myrtle grows in the Pacific northwest and it has a density similar to maple and it produces a rich, nuanced timbre with plenty of overtones.
Because of its smaller size, it’s like an archtop version of an OM, the Oriole doesn’t have the acoustic volume to drive a big band but its well-balanced tone is well suited to solo or small combo work. And thanks to the compact shape it fits up against your body, providing a pleasing vibratory feedback. The Oriole is fitted with a Lollar Johnny Smith-style humbucker, a pristine sounding pickup that is perfectly matched to the timbre of this instrument.
