Few acoustic guitars are as iconic as the Gibson Hummingbird. Introduced in 1960 as Gibson’s first square-shouldered dreadnought, it quickly became a favourite among folk, rock, and country musicians, thanks to its bold tone, striking aesthetics, and exceptional craftsmanship. Known for its rich, balanced sound and smooth playability, the Hummingbird has been a go-to instrument for legendary players, earning its place in countless recordings and performances over the decades.
This 1968 Gibson Hummingbird in natural finish is a beautifully aged example, exuding vintage charm with fine checking throughout the finish, some pickwear, and minor dings and dents that add to its character. The neck is clean and comfortable, with a well-worn but effortless feel that makes it a joy to play. A stable crack runs along the bass side of the fingerboard, though it does not affect the guitar’s structural integrity. The bridge appears to have been re-glued at some point, ensuring solid stability. This guitar has been owned by a professional musician and Australian music royalty, making it not just a fine instrument but a piece of history.
Tonally, this Hummingbird delivers everything you’d expect from a well-played vintage Gibson acoustic—warm, resonant lows, articulate mids, and shimmering highs. The solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides work together to produce a balanced, dynamic tone with excellent projection and depth. Whether strumming full-bodied chords or fingerpicking delicate passages, this guitar responds beautifully, with a clear and expressive voice. A lovely example of a late-'60s Hummingbird, this is a guitar with soul, history, and that unmistakable Gibson acoustic magic.
